Somatic self-understanding

Fight, flight, freeze, fawn: the four ways your body learned to survive.

Thawing makes small, private tools for understanding the survival responses you live inside, grounded in psychotherapist Pete Walker's 4F model. The clearest place to start is seeing which response your nervous system reaches for first.

The 4F model

Four responses to a threat you couldn't escape

The 4F model, named by psychotherapist Pete Walker in Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving, describes four instinctive ways the nervous system responds to threat. The response that kept you safest early in life can wire in as your habitual, default reaction to stress as an adult. Each one runs on a continuum, from a healthy form to a stuck one.

Fight
Confront the threat directly, assertiveness and boundaries at its healthy end, control or aggression at its extreme.
Assertive ↔ Bullying
Flight
Escape into movement or action, drive and efficiency, tipping into restlessness or overwork.
Efficient ↔ Driven
Freeze
Shut down or hide, calm stillness, tipping into withdrawal or dissociation.
Peaceful ↔ Catatonic
Fawn
Appease to reduce the threat, genuine helpfulness and attunement, tipping into self-erasure and people-pleasing.
Helpful ↔ Servitude

What Thawing is

A mirror, not a diagnosis

Thawing is a small, independent project, a place to notice patterns, not a clinic and not a data business. Its tools are for reflection and self-understanding; none of them assess or treat a mental-health condition. For clinical concerns, a qualified professional is the right place to turn.

The work draws on Pete Walker's Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving, which added fawn as the fourth response to the classic fight–flight–freeze triad. The somatic statements and type descriptions used in the quiz are original adaptations written for this project. The item design, the scoring, and the quiz's honest limits are documented in plain language on the methodology page.
